Hands on at the semantic web
usefull information from the web. Last year has shown us portals like Wikipedia, FLICKR, REUTERS, Freebase, MusicBrainz, the
BBC, WordNet, diverse libraries and more going Semantic!
Do you want to get a better understanding for what the Semantic Web really is and how it behaves? Would you like to go «under
the hood» and find out if this is something for you and your organisation? Wonder what RDF, OWL, SPARQL, Protégé and Ontology
means?
After several very popular Semantic Web seminars, we have decided to shift focus from telling you what the Semantic Web is
into letting you feel what it can do! This means you're going to be «hands on» at SOFTWARE 2009!
Come, listen and discuss with key-note speaker Sebastian Trüg, KDE, MANDRIVA, NEPOMUK. Sebastian will tell about and show
us how deep integrated semantic web technology is in the Open Source Linux based desktop environment KDE, what the 20M€ NEPOMUK
project has to do with it and learn from him and other presenters how to use the technology yourself!
During this day you will learn:
● why to use an ontology,
● how to create one for the semantic web,
● how to use an ontology with your data,
● how to query information with SPARQL,
● how to find and query semantically annotated information sources (like DBpedia) in order to enhance your own applications
and tools.
The track will be led by Robert Engels, ESIS Norge and David Norheim, Computas, with introductions by Sebastian Trüg, EDGE-IT,
Christian Bogstad, OKADO, Kjetil Kjernsmo, Computas and the track leaders.

Things to remember:
– ENGLISH spoken, due to non-norwegian attendance
– BRING YOUR LAPTOP with a CD-rom player, we plan to use a LiveCD so that it is irrelevant which operating system you run!
– We will run 3 to 4 1-hour hands-on sessions!
Sebastian Trüg lives in Germany and works as a computer scientist. He received his MSc from the University in Freiburg in
2006 and is most known for being the developer and maintainer of k3b, the CD/DVD burning application for KDE.
Sebastian has been the key person in bringing semantic technology to the KDE desktop. Within the 180 MNOK EU-project NEPOMUK
("social semantic desktop"), he has implemented and augmented many of the KDE 4.x architecture with functionality supporting
the semantic web way of thinking. At Software 2009, he will tell us what he did, why and most important how we can use it
in our developments, projects and daily life!
